Natural Hair Agenda Series-Flax Seeds a Chemical-Free Alternative to Hair Gel

Flaxseed or linseed comes from Linum usitatissimum, a blue flowered plant. Flax seeds are thought to have originated in the ancient Middle East during biblical times. Historians have traced its cultivation in Babylon as early as 3000 BC.

Since 1994, Canada has held the position of the world's leader in the production and export of flax.  They are an important source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including Omega-3, plus Magnesium, Zinc and dietary fiber. Flax seeds can be bought in health food stores and can be found in grocery store health food sections.

Flax oil from flax seed is the richest known source of linolenic acid. Flax seed contains protein, mucilage, phytosterols and lignans, which are naturally included at 100 times the level of wheat bran (the next best source). The benefits of eating flax seed include lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

It is also helpful in conditions related to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including high cholesterol, the treatment of sore throat, upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and can be applied to the skin for acne, burns, boils, eczema and psoriasis.

Many natural hair wearers have been making their own styling gel from flax seeds. Flax Seed gel is a great alternative for those seeking a natural hair gel. It enhances curls, controls frizz and does not flake or harden.

The mucilage in the seeds produce a gel when the seeds are boiled. Aloe vera or carrier oils can be mixed with flax seed gel for added moisture, as well as essential oils which will enhance the gel’s properties and preserve the mixture for up to three weeks.

Make your own flax seed gel …

Tools:
1 cup water
2 tablespoons of flax seeds
Saucepan
Measuring spoon
Tongs
Stocking cap or Cheesecloth
Container with lid
Optional
Essential oils/additives - Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil, lavender,

Directions:
Line your container with the stocking cap or cheesecloth and set aside. Bring water to boil, stir in flax seeds. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 mins, while stirring. You will notice the mixture thickening, and foam/gel beginning to form. After 10 mins remove from heat (your mixture will continue to thicken as it sits).

Pour mixture into your lined container, while it is still hot for easier straining. Carefully remove the liner from the container. While holding the liner filled with flax seeds over the container, use the tongs - to protect your fingers - to strain the gel directly into the container.

After the gel cools, mix in your additives. Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of lavender or your favorite essential oil to add fragrance. If you are adding both essential oils and a carrier oil - mix these separately adding 1 drop of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, before adding to your gel. If you are adding aloe vera, add one part Aloe - to three parts flaxseed gel.

Dependent upon whether you added essential oils - that will act as a preservative - the gel can be stored in the refridgerator for up to three weeks. The flax seeds can be put into a separate container and frozen, to be used again until they no longer produce mucilage.

Product Review: Knot On My Watch

Alright Curly Girls, I had to get this product review out to you as quickly as possible. In fact I'm so much in a hurry to put this out that I'm sitting underneath my dryer as we speak typing this review. I had to share with you this product line that I've recently fallen madly head over hills over. I "heart" Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils (AJCC) line.

I was first introduced to them during a Natural Hair Expo that I attended in Kansas City, Kansas a few weeks back. I hadn’t heard of them before attending the expo. But any rate, I was given a few samples of their products.  Being the overly obsessive product junkie that I am, I decided to give AJCC’s Knot On My Watch a try on my wash day to detangle my wild and unruly mane instead of the products I normally use.  As you can imagine my skepticisms in trying this new product because every line on the market swears that they are the best thing since slice bread and that their "stuff" works better than the 50 million other natural hair products that are out there on the market. So naturally, I put little energy in believing that this stuff even worked because I figured that they were amongst the most that did just OK.

As many of you naturalistas know, detangling is the devil and a pain to do because of all the work that’s involved. I honestly dread washing my hair some days because I know that once I’m done washing and conditioning the real work begins with detangling. I threw caution to the wind and slathered the stuff in my hair real good and went to combing and BAMM!!!  Just like that my wide toothed comb slid right on through like silk. Just to make sure that I wasn't crazy and that this goodness in this small white packet wasn't too good to be true, I slid the comb through in a different section of my hair and again the comb slid straight through.

SIDEBAR: Ladies, lean in for a minute now and please, please,  please don't think I'm crazy but I was so excited about this stuff that I started doing a country church shout right there in my bathroom. I literally had a tear in my eye because this Knot On My Watch was so amazing. Not to mention the smell was heavenly.

Do you know how much time I saved using this stuff? I don't think you all realize the magnitude of this great find.  Do you not know the amount of agony and pain that I will no longer have to endure because of my new best friend!!! If you are looking for a product to aide you in your detangling defiantly give Aunt Jackie's Knot On My Watch a try. I couldn't wait to share the news with you all. This is defiantly a keeper and a true staple.

Stay tuned for more product reviews from the Aunt Jackie Curls and Coils line.

Natural Hair Agenda Series: A Quick Lesson on How Conditioners Work

Conditioners, aid in detangling, fighting frizz, strengthening and preventing damage to your hair by locking in moisture. But exactly how do they work?

Most conditioners fall into the category of surface acting conditioners. They are formulated to work on the outer layer or cuticle of the hair strand. Deep conditioners - the ones where you are instructed to keep on from 15 to 20 mins with a plastic cap and/or heat - contain ingredients that are humectants (moisture retainers).

Deep conditioners penetrate the inner core, the cortex, of your hair supplying moisture and protein. They also contain hydrating ingredients such as aloe, wheat germ and olive oil. These conditioners, are called pack conditioners, and are heavy and creamy in consistency.

Leave-in conditioners do not penetrate the hair strand, but are formulated to quickly coat the hair and protect it until the next washing. They are lightweight, and will contain lighter conditioning agents, which add little weight to the hair.

Each hair strand has three layers and the cuticle is the outer layer which protects them. The cuticle consists of scales that cover the hair strand. Everyday styling, combing/brushing, washing, and the strands simply rubbing against each other causes friction and raises the scales on the hair strand. Conditioners work by coating the hair strand, making the scales close against the strand smoother.

When the scales on the hair strand become severely damaged via harsh chemicals, bleach, sun, etc. the hair strand is weakened, begins to break down and layer by layer the cuticle begins to disappear exposing the cortex layer which it once protected. Once the cortex is exposed, split ends appear and the hair eventually breaks.

Again, conditioning your hair is a way to keep the scales on the hair strand smooth and therefore protecting the cuticle. Also after conditioning, when the hair dries, it is coated with a thin film,  and prevents static electricity from building up and 'frizzing' the hair. Our hair carries negative electrical charges, ingredients in conditioners carry positive electrical charges. The negative charges attract to the positive charges, which cancel each other out and therefore reduces static electricity, again eliminating frizz.

The thin film left behind by ingredients found in conditioners like panthenol, amino acids and Vitamin B5 also help raised cuticle scales on each hair strand to lie flat, which enhances hair color creating luster and shine. Flat cuticles also make the hair strands smoother and detangling much easier.

Natural Hair Agenda Series: 10 Butters for Your Hair and Skin

Shea, Cocoa, Olive, or Mango may be some of the most common butters known that are beneficial for your hair and skin. Murumuru and Illipe Butters are amongst the more expensive on the market, but there are other less expensive ones available that can be used alone, or mixed with other butters and even conditioner to enhance their properties.

Butter made from fruit, beans, seeds and leaves is produced by hydrogenating the cold pressed oil extracted from them. From oils themselves, for instance Hemp Seed Oil, butter is produced by extracting the oil and combining the fatty acids and unsaponifiables (wax) from the oil. Extracted oils are also blended with Palm Oil, Soybean Oil or other vegetable oils to make butter.

The following is a list of butters that you can use on your body and hair - some of which you may have not heard of.

1. Sweet Almond Butter - its properties are similar to Shea Butter and it contains essential fatty acids. It is great for dry skin/scalp because it hydrates the skin and restores elasticity.

2. Coffee Bean Butter - is natural protection from ultraviolet light and is becoming a popular ingredient in sunscreen products. It is an antioxidant and contains phytosterols which have anti-irritation and anti-inflammatory properties, condition skin and hair and promote moisture retention. It is good for dry skin.

3. Kokum Butter - it has the ability to soften skin and heal ulcerations of lips, hands and soles of feet. Kokum Butter helps reduce degeneration of the skin cells and restores elasticity.

4. Hemp Seed Butter - is rich in essential fatty acids that nourish the skin and helps reduce moisture loss from the skin.

5. Avocado Butter - is a great moisturizing treatment for hair. It makes a good butter for belly balms and lip balms. It can be used as an eye makeup remover and in hair conditioning creams.

6. Green Tea Butter - is anti-inflammatory, anti-cellulite (much cheaper than those anti-cellulite creams on the market - about $9 for 8oz) and has anti-irritancy and anti-fungal effects. It has a high content of polyphenols (antioxidants). It protects the skin from aging and against UV-B rays.

7. Pistachio Butter - rich in fatty acids that moisturizes and softens skin. It has excellent penetrating qualities - good massage butter. It also has a low comedogenicity (doesn’t clog pores).

8. Macadamia Butter - has a high concentration of palmitoleic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid. Our production of palmitoleic acid decreases as we get older so this butter is great for mature skin, as well as and dry skin.

9. Orange Butter - has a high concentration of Bioflavonoids (Vitamin P - that neutralizes free-radicals) polyphenols (antioxidants). It has anti-cellulite and anti-inflammatory properties and other protective benefits for skin, such as a cleansing and toning effect. It can improve oily, acne prone skin.

10. Cupuacu Butter - is similar to Cocoa Butter, but has a softer, creamier consistency. It contains essential fatty acids and phytosterols, and is very moisturizing for skin and hair. It is also a natural protection from UV-A and UV-B rays. It can be used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis and adds shine and replenishes moisture in hair.

Almost all of the butters mentioned above can be purchased at reasonable prices via the links below. Texas Natural Supply sells sample sizes starting at $1.60 and up. The Kokum Butter may be a bit expensive at about $13 for 8oz, as well as the Cupuacu Butter at about $3 an ounce. Remember, if you have an existing scalp or skin conditions consult your doctor or pharmacist before using.

This Week's Spotlight~ Leila Njimoluh: "Here and There"

Throughout her travels to Europe Leila Njimoluh of Baltimore, MD quickly realized the need for quality ethnic hair and skincare products for women of color living abroad. Perhaps more important, she felt that women could learn more about how to achieve healthier hair and skin if they could share beauty advice. So Leila created www.isabisbeauty.com to start addressing the beauty needs of our sisters living here and abroad. Her website is currently in two languages and currencies: English (USD, GBP) and French. Women can expect to find Dominican hair care products, natural hair products, and a dermatologist-created skincare line for ethnic women called Specific Beauty. The goal of www.isabisbeauty.com is to create a positive environment for women of color in USA and abroad to share beauty advice and buy quality hair and skincare products.

My Greatest Accomplishment to Date Has Been:
Seeing my dream come true when I launched www.isabisbeauty.com on January 15, 2012. One year ago I had no knowledge of ecommerce other than shopping on Amazon. I immersed myself into the world of online retail by reading a lot of books, my first one being Ecommerce for Dummies! I must admit I had never read so much in such a narrow time period in my life..other than textbooks about human diseases. I also learned a lot about the technical aspect of running a website from sales people at web design companies. I was known as the client who asks a lot of questions, but I didn’t mind because that’s the only way I could learn.

The Most Challenging Thing I Ever Experienced Is:
Balancing the many hats I wear as CEO of Isabis and being a medical school student is a constant challenge. Part of being an entrepreneur is accepting taking risk as an everyday joy of business. I always heard that studying was the only thing medical students had time for but I couldn’t let that discourage me from reaching my extracurricular goals. I’ve loved the beauty industry since middle school, a little before I started working in hair salons, and I wasn’t going to let the challenges of medical school stop me from pursuing a passionate hobby. In order to make these challenges more manageable, I constantly assess my time-management skills and look for ways to be efficient. As my responsibilities change in medical school, so will my approach to managing Isabis Beauty. It’s all about adapting!

My Most Valuable Lessons:
Give a lot before taking a little. Never be afraid to ask.

Final Remarks:
Thank you BOND inc. for the opportunity to share my story with your audience. I’m always looking for ways to support other women in business so if there’s anything I can do to support your endeavors please feel free to reach out. Let’s continue to support one another and always stay positive.

Natural & All Journey Feature: Kinky Kinetik

Hello my name is Kera 'Kinky Kinetik' Lee

My natural hair journey began a little something like this… In early 2009, I had gotten a relaxer.  I was getting ready to go to Miami for Memorial weekend and was getting a sewn-in weave with braids in the front.  I got a mini-touch up at that time.  I say mini as I didn’t leave it in long and I didn’t smooth it through my entire head.  That was the last time a relaxer touched my hair.  I kept sewn-in weaves in for a while and then in November of that same year, I cut off the rest of my ‘relaxed’ ends.

I decided to go natural because…. Aside from health reasons, I wanted to go natural because I really love natural hair.  It’s liberating!
My friends and family were not all fully supportive of my decision to go natural and as a result I …did wonder if natural is for me, would being natural be 'accepted,' and if they would eventually accept me as a NATURAL beauty.  After all, my decision to go natural was something I believed in and really wanted to do.

The goal for my hair is just to be healthy, with minimal knots and split ends and to get to bra strap length.  I don't think I need to be at hip, knee, or ankle length!!

If I were stranded on an island the products I just couldn’t live without are water, coconut oil, a satin bonnet and ouchless elastic headband because water will moisturize my hair and the coconut oil will add a bit more moisture, shine, manageability and act as a sealant.  I would wrap my hair nightly with the satin bonnet and when I want to rock a puff, instead of a twist out, I will use the ouchless elastic band.
Throughout this journey I’ve learned … patience is needed as your hair will not always act, or grow, how and when you want it to.  I have also learned that what works for one, doesn't work for all when it comes to hair products.

Natural & All Feature: Shana

Hello my name is Shana and I am in love with my natural hair!
My natural hair journey began a little something like this….
In February, about 8 months after first cutting my hair, I got frustrated with trying to maintain a perm as it grew out and decided to just cut the perm out and start fresh short with natural hair. About 6 months after that cut, I decided to start fresh and cut all my hair off again. I did an awful job and had a few patches so I had to go to the barber shop and told the barber to give me a fade.

I decided to go natural because I was tired of my hair.  I had long hair before getting it cut initially and although many believed I wasn’t, I was a perm head. My hair was getting dry and brittle from a lot of coloring, perming and cutting. I never seemed to be satisfied with how my hair looked, long or not. I had been researching going natural for months before cutting my hair but I was not sure if it was something I really wanted to do. I was scared of the stigma that may come with being natural and feeling unattractive. When I first cut the perm out, I received a lot of smart comments because I would pluck it out like an afro. People would walk pass me and put their fist up, LOL. When I cut it the second time, people really were surprised.

My friends and family were shocked but supportive of my decision to go natural and as a result I felt even more comfortable with myself and my decision. I think overall, they just want me to have my long hair again LOL.

The goal for my hair is just to continue to grow it out. I miss my long hair but I just do not miss having perms. Since going natural, I have learned that I have a pretty nice grain of hair. My hair gets real curly when I wet it and I never realized I had curly hair. The one thing I do not like is that my hair gets frizzy! I have found some good products that help me maintain that and basically on rainy days I just do not try. Even with that, to me, my natural curls are golden.

If I were stranded on an island the products I just couldn’t live without are coconut oil and Cantu Leave- in Conditioner because they make my hair soft and my natural pretty curls can form.

Throughout this journey I’ve learned confidence is important.  I have learned since being natural that natural is for everyone but not everyone is meant to be natural. You have to have patience and a real desire to want to learn about your hair. It does not make you any more or any less of a person. Just do you!

Natural & All Feature: Priscilla

Hello my name is Priscilla
My natural hair journey began a little something like this…
For much of my adult life hair extensions, weaves, braids, and sew-ins were my go to choice of styling.  I also wasn’t a stranger to color and my hair being over processed not only by me but professional hairstylist as well. No one not even me listened to my hair. If my hair broke off it was cut short and hidden under a weave, wig or braids. This went on for years at least until 2009. In 2009 I noticed my once thick hair was see through thin and my hair line was moving back fast. I started researching and watching YouTube videos on hair healthy.  With a fresh trim my hair started to grow and my hair line was slowly returning. Things were going great with my hair. Until March 3, 2010 three days before my husband’s birthday when I opted to get a touch-up (my new growth relaxed). The next day after getting my hair done was horrible, as I started to comb my wrapped hair down clumps of my hair began to come out, leaving me with a softball size bald spot in the top of my head.

I decided to go natural because my hair was extremely damaged and I had a bald spot in the center of my head from my last relaxer March 3, 2010. I rocked the iconic Donald Trump comb-over for a few weeks thereafter (I can laugh about this now, but then it brought tears to my eyes). I transitioned for about six months.  Through the use of braids, twist, rods, bantu knots, hats & wigs. I was able to see my hair grow back in spots that were once bald. On September 24, 2010 I did my 1st big chop.  Yet I still had noticeable weak areas in my hair especially in the center. Eight months after my first big chop May 19, 2011 I bc’d again.  The second big chop did the trick my hair is thicker and stronger and growing fast.

My friends and family were very supportive of my decision to go natural.
I was more nervous about my decisions to go natural then my friends and family.  My husband and two daughters have been my greatest supporters and love me and my hair just the same.  My grandmother had been natural for years smiled and hugged me tight and said “now you look like the Priscilla I raised”.  Some of my friend’s opinions of my natural hair decision were mixed. The versatility I show them with my natural hair and its growth made them a believer that natural hair is indeed BEATUIFUL!!!

The goal for my hair is not length focused but health focused. For my hair to be thicker, healthier and strong then it has ever been before and to reach its full potential.

If I were stranded on an island the products I just couldn’t live without are my homemade misting spray a mixture of rose water/or plain water, glycerin, jojoba oil, grape seed oil and vitamin E oil.  And Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie because they make my hair so soft and manageable with a great shine and amazing curl definition.

Throughout this journey I’ve learned to keep it simple that less is more (limit the amount of product or products I use on my hair).  That my hair is unique and that my regiment is not and will not be like other naturals. Also that if your confident about your hair and love it so will others.

If you would like to be featured or post any of your health and beauty information on our Natural & All page please send your inquiries to iambondinc@gmail.com.

Natural & All: Question of the Day- " Just Go to YouTube"

A two part question.
Whenever someone asks for styling help, the most tried and true comment I read is “Go to YouTube”. (YT)
So to those that watch (YT) videos, what is one piece of advice you would give to someone interested in creating videos?  Are there any unspoken rules or YT etiquette they should know?
Also, are there any pros and cons to watching (YT) videos?

Natural and All: Question of the Day

At what point in your natural hair journey did YOU finally accept your Natural Hair.
Let’s be honest, everyone doesn’t embraced their natural hair state as soon as they decide to go natural.
Let’s talk about it.
