Natural Hair Agenda Series: Time Saving Hairstyling Tips

If you are like me and find yourself always rushing to get out the door in the morning, the last thing you need to worry about is styling your hair. The following hairstyling tips should help.

When it comes to washing hair, a great time saving tip is to prepare your hair for washing the night before you wash. Take down, detangle and pre-poo at night and then wash and style in the morning.
When it comes to styling, you can achieve beautiful natural hairstyles without spending hours doing them. Simple styles like chunky/curly fros, updos, puffs and wash-in-gos are easy to do and can be done minutes before you leave the house. For textured looks, aside from wash-n-gos, spritz your hair with water at night, and put in 8 to 10 large braids or twists.

Depending on how long you want your texture to last, you may want to add an alcohol-free gel, curly pudding or hair milk. In the morning when your hair is dry unbraid or untwist. You can then just add a headband for a puff, put a twist on either side and pin them back and wear the back out, or put your hair in an updo.

Styling your hair at night or even the week before is a great way to save time. Small Two-strand twists and box braids are my favorite time saving hairstyles. Although it may take 4 hours or longer to put them in, once they are in they are very versatile, can be rinse and or washed and can last for months.

Two-in-one styles are also great time savers. You can make two-in-one styles from styles such as box braids, two-strand twists, flat twists and even wash-n-gos. Braids and twists can be transformed into so many styles, including updos, buns, braid-outs and twist-outs. Wash-n-gos can be transformed into textured puffs, and updos as well.

Natural Hair Agenda Series-Flax Seeds a Chemical-Free Alternative to Hair Gel

Flaxseed or linseed comes from Linum usitatissimum, a blue flowered plant. Flax seeds are thought to have originated in the ancient Middle East during biblical times. Historians have traced its cultivation in Babylon as early as 3000 BC.

Since 1994, Canada has held the position of the world's leader in the production and export of flax.  They are an important source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including Omega-3, plus Magnesium, Zinc and dietary fiber. Flax seeds can be bought in health food stores and can be found in grocery store health food sections.

Flax oil from flax seed is the richest known source of linolenic acid. Flax seed contains protein, mucilage, phytosterols and lignans, which are naturally included at 100 times the level of wheat bran (the next best source). The benefits of eating flax seed include lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

It is also helpful in conditions related to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including high cholesterol, the treatment of sore throat, upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and can be applied to the skin for acne, burns, boils, eczema and psoriasis.

Many natural hair wearers have been making their own styling gel from flax seeds. Flax Seed gel is a great alternative for those seeking a natural hair gel. It enhances curls, controls frizz and does not flake or harden.

The mucilage in the seeds produce a gel when the seeds are boiled. Aloe vera or carrier oils can be mixed with flax seed gel for added moisture, as well as essential oils which will enhance the gel’s properties and preserve the mixture for up to three weeks.

Make your own flax seed gel …

Tools:
1 cup water
2 tablespoons of flax seeds
Saucepan
Measuring spoon
Tongs
Stocking cap or Cheesecloth
Container with lid
Optional
Essential oils/additives - Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil, lavender,

Directions:
Line your container with the stocking cap or cheesecloth and set aside. Bring water to boil, stir in flax seeds. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 mins, while stirring. You will notice the mixture thickening, and foam/gel beginning to form. After 10 mins remove from heat (your mixture will continue to thicken as it sits).

Pour mixture into your lined container, while it is still hot for easier straining. Carefully remove the liner from the container. While holding the liner filled with flax seeds over the container, use the tongs - to protect your fingers - to strain the gel directly into the container.

After the gel cools, mix in your additives. Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of lavender or your favorite essential oil to add fragrance. If you are adding both essential oils and a carrier oil - mix these separately adding 1 drop of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, before adding to your gel. If you are adding aloe vera, add one part Aloe - to three parts flaxseed gel.

Dependent upon whether you added essential oils - that will act as a preservative - the gel can be stored in the refridgerator for up to three weeks. The flax seeds can be put into a separate container and frozen, to be used again until they no longer produce mucilage.

Product Review: Knot On My Watch

Alright Curly Girls, I had to get this product review out to you as quickly as possible. In fact I'm so much in a hurry to put this out that I'm sitting underneath my dryer as we speak typing this review. I had to share with you this product line that I've recently fallen madly head over hills over. I "heart" Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils (AJCC) line.

I was first introduced to them during a Natural Hair Expo that I attended in Kansas City, Kansas a few weeks back. I hadn’t heard of them before attending the expo. But any rate, I was given a few samples of their products.  Being the overly obsessive product junkie that I am, I decided to give AJCC’s Knot On My Watch a try on my wash day to detangle my wild and unruly mane instead of the products I normally use.  As you can imagine my skepticisms in trying this new product because every line on the market swears that they are the best thing since slice bread and that their "stuff" works better than the 50 million other natural hair products that are out there on the market. So naturally, I put little energy in believing that this stuff even worked because I figured that they were amongst the most that did just OK.

As many of you naturalistas know, detangling is the devil and a pain to do because of all the work that’s involved. I honestly dread washing my hair some days because I know that once I’m done washing and conditioning the real work begins with detangling. I threw caution to the wind and slathered the stuff in my hair real good and went to combing and BAMM!!!  Just like that my wide toothed comb slid right on through like silk. Just to make sure that I wasn't crazy and that this goodness in this small white packet wasn't too good to be true, I slid the comb through in a different section of my hair and again the comb slid straight through.

SIDEBAR: Ladies, lean in for a minute now and please, please,  please don't think I'm crazy but I was so excited about this stuff that I started doing a country church shout right there in my bathroom. I literally had a tear in my eye because this Knot On My Watch was so amazing. Not to mention the smell was heavenly.

Do you know how much time I saved using this stuff? I don't think you all realize the magnitude of this great find.  Do you not know the amount of agony and pain that I will no longer have to endure because of my new best friend!!! If you are looking for a product to aide you in your detangling defiantly give Aunt Jackie's Knot On My Watch a try. I couldn't wait to share the news with you all. This is defiantly a keeper and a true staple.

Stay tuned for more product reviews from the Aunt Jackie Curls and Coils line.

Natural Hair Agenda Series: 10 Butters for Your Hair and Skin

Shea, Cocoa, Olive, or Mango may be some of the most common butters known that are beneficial for your hair and skin. Murumuru and Illipe Butters are amongst the more expensive on the market, but there are other less expensive ones available that can be used alone, or mixed with other butters and even conditioner to enhance their properties.

Butter made from fruit, beans, seeds and leaves is produced by hydrogenating the cold pressed oil extracted from them. From oils themselves, for instance Hemp Seed Oil, butter is produced by extracting the oil and combining the fatty acids and unsaponifiables (wax) from the oil. Extracted oils are also blended with Palm Oil, Soybean Oil or other vegetable oils to make butter.

The following is a list of butters that you can use on your body and hair - some of which you may have not heard of.

1. Sweet Almond Butter - its properties are similar to Shea Butter and it contains essential fatty acids. It is great for dry skin/scalp because it hydrates the skin and restores elasticity.

2. Coffee Bean Butter - is natural protection from ultraviolet light and is becoming a popular ingredient in sunscreen products. It is an antioxidant and contains phytosterols which have anti-irritation and anti-inflammatory properties, condition skin and hair and promote moisture retention. It is good for dry skin.

3. Kokum Butter - it has the ability to soften skin and heal ulcerations of lips, hands and soles of feet. Kokum Butter helps reduce degeneration of the skin cells and restores elasticity.

4. Hemp Seed Butter - is rich in essential fatty acids that nourish the skin and helps reduce moisture loss from the skin.

5. Avocado Butter - is a great moisturizing treatment for hair. It makes a good butter for belly balms and lip balms. It can be used as an eye makeup remover and in hair conditioning creams.

6. Green Tea Butter - is anti-inflammatory, anti-cellulite (much cheaper than those anti-cellulite creams on the market - about $9 for 8oz) and has anti-irritancy and anti-fungal effects. It has a high content of polyphenols (antioxidants). It protects the skin from aging and against UV-B rays.

7. Pistachio Butter - rich in fatty acids that moisturizes and softens skin. It has excellent penetrating qualities - good massage butter. It also has a low comedogenicity (doesn’t clog pores).

8. Macadamia Butter - has a high concentration of palmitoleic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid. Our production of palmitoleic acid decreases as we get older so this butter is great for mature skin, as well as and dry skin.

9. Orange Butter - has a high concentration of Bioflavonoids (Vitamin P - that neutralizes free-radicals) polyphenols (antioxidants). It has anti-cellulite and anti-inflammatory properties and other protective benefits for skin, such as a cleansing and toning effect. It can improve oily, acne prone skin.

10. Cupuacu Butter - is similar to Cocoa Butter, but has a softer, creamier consistency. It contains essential fatty acids and phytosterols, and is very moisturizing for skin and hair. It is also a natural protection from UV-A and UV-B rays. It can be used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis and adds shine and replenishes moisture in hair.

Almost all of the butters mentioned above can be purchased at reasonable prices via the links below. Texas Natural Supply sells sample sizes starting at $1.60 and up. The Kokum Butter may be a bit expensive at about $13 for 8oz, as well as the Cupuacu Butter at about $3 an ounce. Remember, if you have an existing scalp or skin conditions consult your doctor or pharmacist before using.

Natural & All Feature: Priscilla

Hello my name is Priscilla
My natural hair journey began a little something like this
For much of my adult life hair extensions, weaves, braids, and sew-ins were my go to choice of styling.  I also wasn’t a stranger to color and my hair being over processed not only by me but professional hairstylist as well. No one not even me listened to my hair. If my hair broke off it was cut short and hidden under a weave, wig or braids. This went on for years at least until 2009. In 2009 I noticed my once thick hair was see through thin and my hair line was moving back fast. I started researching and watching YouTube videos on hair healthy.  With a fresh trim my hair started to grow and my hair line was slowly returning. Things were going great with my hair. Until March 3, 2010 three days before my husband’s birthday when I opted to get a touch-up (my new growth relaxed). The next day after getting my hair done was horrible, as I started to comb my wrapped hair down clumps of my hair began to come out, leaving me with a softball size bald spot in the top of my head.

I decided to go natural because my hair was extremely damaged and I had a bald spot in the center of my head from my last relaxer March 3, 2010. I rocked the iconic Donald Trump comb-over for a few weeks thereafter (I can laugh about this now, but then it brought tears to my eyes). I transitioned for about six months.  Through the use of braids, twist, rods, bantu knots, hats & wigs. I was able to see my hair grow back in spots that were once bald. On September 24, 2010 I did my 1st big chop.  Yet I still had noticeable weak areas in my hair especially in the center. Eight months after my first big chop May 19, 2011 I bc’d again.  The second big chop did the trick my hair is thicker and stronger and growing fast.

My friends and family were very supportive of my decision to go natural.
I was more nervous about my decisions to go natural then my friends and family.  My husband and two daughters have been my greatest supporters and love me and my hair just the same.  My grandmother had been natural for years smiled and hugged me tight and said “now you look like the Priscilla I raised”.  Some of my friend’s opinions of my natural hair decision were mixed. The versatility I show them with my natural hair and its growth made them a believer that natural hair is indeed BEATUIFUL!!!

The goal for my hair is not length focused but health focused. For my hair to be thicker, healthier and strong then it has ever been before and to reach its full potential.

If I were stranded on an island the products I just couldn’t live without are my homemade misting spray a mixture of rose water/or plain water, glycerin, jojoba oil, grape seed oil and vitamin E oil.  And Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie because they make my hair so soft and manageable with a great shine and amazing curl definition.

Throughout this journey I’ve learned to keep it simple that less is more (limit the amount of product or products I use on my hair).  That my hair is unique and that my regiment is not and will not be like other naturals. Also that if your confident about your hair and love it so will others.

Natural and All Feature: Angela

Hello my name is Angela
My natural hair journey began a little something like this…
It was my last semester in college and I was going to Paris, France to study fashion abroad for a couple of months.  My intentions were to stay in Paris indefinitely and I had no idea what kinds of products were available to black “relaxed” hair.  So, I decided to cut off ALL of my hair (a decision that was made in 2 seconds) and go natural.  I felt so free and at that moment, I was not defined or restricted by my hair.

I decided to go natural because I was scared to go to Paris with relaxed hair.  All I could think about was not being able to buy my Pink Oil Moisturizing Lotion.  The funny thing was that once I arrived in Paris, all of my products were available and cheaper!

My friends and family were very shocked but not surprised of my decision to go natural and as a result and after many years of me being natural…both of my sisters are natural too.

The goal for my hair is just to let it be.  For a long time, I was uncomfortable with my decision to go natural.  It was in the late 1990’s and a lot of my friends were not embracing the natural look.  Being in my 20’s, I wanted to “fit” in with my peers but at the same time…I just loved the freedom my hair gave me so I stuck with it.

If I were stranded on an island the products I just couldn’t live without is my cheap Suave conditioner for my co-washing. Its a must. Suave just came out with an almond and Shea butter one and I just love it. That alone gives my hair moisture and makes it manageable. Also, I would need my leave-in conditioner.  Right now, I am using Cantu.  I decided to give it a try…I discovered it at Target for $4.99 and I couldn’t pass it up.  I co-wash my hair everyday and I do my daily ritual of detangling in the shower.  I have my whole routine down now to 10mins!

Throughout this journey I’ve learned that your exteriors do not define you…it’s what lies at your core.  All those years of feeling insecure/embarrassed about my short “nappy” hair taught me that lesson.  Once I realized that I controlled my own destiny and was responsible for my life, my hair was just another accessory.  I have learned to nurture and love Francine “my fro” with all of my being and she just keeps giving me the love back.  Now I would not trade her for anything.  Sometimes I do press and I have done a full weave once but I always come back to Francine, she keeps it real!

This Week's Spotlight~Laquita Thomas-Banks-"A Natural Born Leader"

At the age of 13, Laquita Thomas-Banks started an in-home braiding business, styling hair for her family and friends. She's been styling hair - doing everything from natural hair styles, braids and weaves for over 25 years.  Laquita also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Throughout her writing career she's written and edited for both print and online media. Over the past few years, she has been combining her writing skills with her love of natural hair and had the opportunity to write for several online and print magazines and hair sites. She loves sharing the knowledge that she's gained throughout her natural hair journey - i.e., hair care and maintenance techniques, DIY recipes and hairstyles. Laquita has written for Clutch magazine and its sister site Coco and Cream, She writes for the Examiner.com as the DC Natural Hair Examiner. She also writes natural hair articles for Pumpsicle, AfroGlitz, Living No Lye, Sanata International print magazine, and a guest blogger on Kinnks. Laquita also has her own blog and YouTube channel All Naptural. She's also a member of eBraiding/eNaturals Advisory Board, where she assist with the eBraiding/eNaturals’ mission of helping uplift the hair braiding and natural hair care industry into a healthy environment, and promoting unity within both hair care communities. She works as one of the Press, Advertising and PR board members, providing guidance and input to the organization’s executive team.

My Greatest Accomplishment to Date Has Been:
Along with sharing the knowledge that I have gained throughout my natural hair journey, I started my own natural hair products business. Bobeam (bo-bee-um) Natural Hair Products.  Bobeam’s specialty is shampoo bars made with all natural ingredients and they can be used on all hair types.

Through Bobeam I have been able to donate proceeds to various organizations including 1 in 8 Foundation.org - supporting the fight against cancer through early detection, and S.E.L.F. Image Awards Foundation, a non-profit organization that aids families affected by domestic violence.

The Most Challenging Thing I Ever Experienced:
I would have to say the most challenging, but still rewarding thing that I have experienced is creating products that will work for all types of hair. This is a challenge because what works for some may not necessarily work for others. In turn it’s rewarding when, through research, I come across natural ingredients that are beneficial to all types of hair.

Most Valuable Lesson(s):
The most valuable lesson that I have learned so far is to make my passion my business. My mother always told my brother and I to work for ourselves, turn what we like doing - things we are passionate about - into our business.  It took me years to realize that in doing so - waking up every morning doing something that I love, writing, creating my own products, giving back to others - is the key to a happy, stress-free life, and I encourage others to do the same. It’s never too late.

Final Remarks:
I would like to thank BOND Inc. for giving me the opportunity to be profiled along with all the other African American women who have been spotlighted. I feel that recognizing African American women who are doing extraordinary things personally and/or professionally, and sharing their accomplishments is a great way to encourage and inspire others.
